In true Ramsay fashion, the story line is dark, and the clues are complex and confusing until the end. Usually I solve some portion of the mystery, but I was totally stumped by this one and could not begin to guess how the different strands could be woven together.I like Caro Ramsay books in part because she takes risks in her writing. Her books are not typical procedurals, but each includes some different way of looking at the world with complex crimes and at least one unexpected twist near the end. Her characters take a beating, but also grow and evolve across the series. This book has all the elements of her other books, but for me, they did not come together quite as well as in her other books. Still well worth reading, and I recommend both the book and the series. I've read all the Scottish police procedurals. They are all chilling psychological studies, and this yarn doesn't disappoint. Hard to sleep after reading this one.
